Gateway City Soccer Classic

Although this region stretches from Missouri to Wisconsin, there's one thing that ties this massive group of states together – the Gateway City Classic.
This three-day event starts Sept. 30. It's grown into a Who’s Who of prep soccer with teams coming from hundreds of – sometimes over a thousand – miles to take a crack at the best in the Midwest.

This was supposed to be the year for Greensboro Day School (Greensboro, N.C.). With a pair of rising juniors on every major college recruiter’s list, things were looking good – until early July.
Eduardo Alvarez, the team’s high-scoring, all-state forward and member of Greensboro Youth Soccer’s Development Academy program, surprisingly returned to Honduras with his family.

Strongsville (Strongsville, Ohio) may hold the key to ranking the top teams from this region. This fall, Ohio holds the key to sorting out these elite programs – specifically at Strongsville. In the Gateway City Soccer Classic in St. Louis, it is pitted against several powers outside the region. Since other Ohio Division I contenders will take on top programs from Kentucky and Michigan, a fair assessment of the top teams can be made if Strongsville plays deep into the state playoffs.

O'FALLON, Ill. -- Nine days ago, the boys' soccer team at O'Fallon (Ill.) was slotted to play in the Gateway City Soccer Classic Master Bracket, which is comprised of local programs that are not considered on par with the region's elite teams.

EDWARDSVILLE — The Fort Zumwalt South soccer team struck for two early goals and went on to a 3-0 victory over Springfield (Mo.) Catholic to capture the Soccer Master bracket of the Gateway City Soccer Classic Saturday afternoon at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

That's all Christian Brothers (Mo.) needed Saturday afternoon to pin a 3-0 defeat on Milwaukee Marquette (Wis.) in the Gateway City Soccer Classic's Victor Arbelaez Memorial Bracket championship at the Metro United Complex.

ST. LOUIS - Bishop Gorman's boys soccer team made 1,500-mile trek to Quincy, Ill., last year to test itself against the nation's elite. In this year's return to the Midwest, the program also will be playing in memory of their fallen coach.
